What the August JOLTS report actually said
U.S. job openings stood at 7.1 million in August, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Tuesday. July was revised up to 7.3 million. Hiring was little changed at 5.2 million; layoffs and discharges were essentially unchanged at 1.6 million. The headline softened, but the release does not describe a sudden break in hiring or a fresh wave of layoffs. Read the September 29 BLS release and tables.
For traders, the distinction matters. A lower openings count may temper concern about an overheated labor market, yet JOLTS measures August and arrives as oil prices and Treasury yields keep changing in real time. It is one piece of the Fed’s inflation-and-employment picture, not a complete trading signal.
The market’s test after Monday’s bond selloff
Monday’s 10-year Treasury yield closed near 5.23%, and the S&P 500 lost 0.8%, according to Associated Press’s September 28 close report. On Tuesday, oil eased. At 10:37 a.m. ET, AP reported the S&P 500 roughly flat, the Nasdaq up 0.2%, and the Dow down 0.4%. Those are intraday readings, not closing results. The more useful question is whether relief spreads beyond a few large technology names; AP’s Tuesday market report noted that most S&P 500 stocks were lower at that snapshot.
Watch breadth beside the index. If a flat headline index masks broad weakness, a trader should treat an apparent rebound differently from one carried by many sectors. Let price confirm after the initial reaction rather than treating the data release itself as a buy or sell instruction.
What changed in the public PrimeFlow record
The public closed-alert log, updated September 28, added two completed entries since Monday’s Desk issue. GENI entered September 22 at $5.91 and exited September 28 at $6.14, a documented +3.89% move in the stock. KEEL entered September 17 and exited September 28 at $3.69, a 0.00% price move; the log labels that result a loss. We are reporting the record as published, including that label.
These are individual closed desk positions, not 390 Method day-trade results or account returns. The log includes losses. A selected result is not typical and cannot predict anyone’s future results.
Before Wednesday’s inflation release
The Bureau of Economic Analysis has scheduled August personal income and outlays, including the PCE price index, for Wednesday, September 30 at 8:30 a.m. ET. Check BEA’s release schedule. If oil and yields pull in opposite directions, note which one equities follow after the opening range has formed. A move that holds a retest tells a different story from one that reverses immediately.
