Stock futures fell hard last night as the midterm results came in, with Democrats winning both the House and the Senate. By dawn the drop was gone. Nasdaq futures have climbed about 3% from their overnight low, S&P 500 futures are up about 1%, and Dow futures are up about 1.6%.

Where the market closed on Tuesday, November 3, 2026

  • S&P 500: 7,568.92, up 0.36%
  • Dow: 51,786.72, down 0.38%
  • Nasdaq: 25,372.01, up 0.83%
  • 10-year Treasury yield: 4.95%, up 0.04 point
  • Brent crude oil: $103.60 a barrel, down 1.12%
  • Gold futures: $3,940.40 an ounce, down 0.74%

All of that came after Tuesday’s close, so the table doesn’t show it yet.

Why stock futures fell on the midterm results, then recovered

At the low, Nasdaq 100 futures were about 2.4% under Tuesday’s close and at their lowest since July 30. The worry was that the new Congress could put limits on data centers, the buildings behind the AI spending boom.

Japan’s Nikkei fell as much as 4.45% on it before closing down 1.42%. Then US futures turned around while most people were asleep. Moves like these happen while the exchanges are shut, and our guide to premarket trading covers what they tell you about the day ahead.

Solar makers rose and data-center operators slipped, so the money is already betting on what this Congress does.

AMD’s forecast beat Wall Street

On Sunday I said I’d watch AMD more than the vote count. AMD reported after Tuesday’s close and forecast about $17 billion in sales this quarter, against the $16.23 billion Wall Street wanted. Its CEO expects revenue to grow more than 80% in 2027, and the stock jumped about 7% after hours, then gave it back by this morning.

My view

I read last night’s drop as nerves, not a verdict. The new Congress doesn’t sit until January, and with the White House and Congress in different hands, big new laws get harder to pass. AMD’s numbers are here now.

What it means for you

A plain index mutual fund prices at the 4:00 PM close, so last night’s swing never reached your balance. The next report that can move it is Friday’s jobs number at 8:30 AM.

Last night’s swing gets its real test at 9:30. The 40 Minutes That Matter is what our desk teaches every new trader first: a workshop and two one-page cheat sheets, The Level Map and The Session Clock. It normally sells for $49. You can have it for one payment of $7.

Gold jumped. Futures rose almost 3% overnight to about $4,050 an ounce, while the dollar slipped.

Oil kept sliding. Brent sits near $102 this morning, still under the $110 I want it to hold through Friday.

Rates moved first. The 10-year Treasury yield, the rate that steers mortgage costs, rose to 4.95% on Tuesday before a single result came in.
