Hotter prices. Lower yields. Watch the stock response.
Wholesale prices rose 1.3% in September and 6.3% over the past year. Today’s BLS producer-price report keeps inflation pressure in view after yesterday’s consumer-price release.
The early bond response deserves attention: Schwab’s 9:22 a.m. ET briefing reported stocks slipping while Treasury yields fell. A lower yield can accompany defensive buying of bonds; it does not, by itself, tell you investors are becoming more comfortable owning stocks. These are opening-session observations, not live midday quotes.

When stocks and bonds send different signals, mark your chart before choosing a direction. The workshop walks through the day’s shape, eight reference prices and the session clock, with The Level Map and The Session Clock to keep beside your screen.

Energy matters. Services rose, too.
Final-demand goods prices increased 2.6%, including a 10.8% energy rise. Services advanced 0.8%. The measure excluding food, energy and trade services rose 0.5%.
For the businesses you follow, the question is how much of a cost increase can be passed to customers. Listen for changes in margins and pricing on earnings calls. Rising sales can coexist with pressure on profits.
PPI measures producer selling prices; CPI measures consumer prices. Neither number is a mechanical forecast of the next interest-rate decision. Watch how stocks, bonds and sector leadership respond together.
The latest win remains VERX +3.99%.
VERX: October 1, 2026, $12.28 → October 13, 2026, $12.77 (+3.99%). This was covered yesterday; it is not another new win.
The log now also lists HTZ, October 2 → October 14, at $1.79 → $1.79 (+0.00%), labeled LOSS. Those displayed prices are unchanged; the label is the log’s classification. We are not treating that row as a winner.

Write the risk down before the next headline.
Choose the amount you are prepared to lose before deciding your position size. Then identify the price that invalidates your idea. If a wider price swing would put that loss beyond your limit, reduce size or pass.
Our guide to managing risk shows how to turn that loss limit into a position size before placing an order.
