The PrimeFlow Desk · Tuesday, October 20, 2026 · After-Hours Edition

The Dow gained 530 points on Tuesday, October 20, 2026. The Nasdaq, home of the technology giants, finished 6 points lower. Same market, same afternoon, two very different scores.

Where the market closed on Tuesday, October 20

  • S&P 500: 7,712.57, up 0.28%
  • Dow: 52,495.88, up 1.02% (529.85 points)
  • Nasdaq: 26,424.82, down 0.02%
  • Russell 2000: 2,773.41, up 1.65%
  • 10-year Treasury yield: 5.12%, down from 5.15%
  • Oil (Brent): $108.79 a barrel, down 0.7%

Cheaper oil and a slightly lower 10-year yield gave older, slower companies room to run while tech rested.

Small caps lead as money leaves tech

For two weeks technology set the market’s direction. Today the rest of the market did the lifting. The Russell 2000, the index of smaller American companies, rose 1.65%. 3M beat profit forecasts and raised its outlook for the year, and drug makers climbed too.

My view: a rally that spreads to the smaller companies is healthier than one carried by a handful of giants. I’d still want the 10-year yield to ease before I trust it for more than a day or two.

Days like this are decided by where the money goes first. The 40 Minutes That Matter is what our desk teaches every new trader first: a workshop and two one-page cheat sheets, The Level Map and The Session Clock, so you know which prices to mark before the open and which part of the session to trust. It normally sells for $49. You can have it for one payment of $7.

Netflix third-quarter results: shares slip after the bell

Netflix reported after the 4:00 PM close. Profit beat forecasts, but the company cut this year’s advertising estimate to $2.7 billion from $3 billion, and the shares fell in late trading.

September 2026 housing starts: 1.22 million

Builders started homes at a 1.22 million yearly pace in September, down 5.2% from August and short of the 1.3 million economists expected, the Census Bureau reported. With the 10-year Treasury yield above 5% all month, that’s the number I keep watching.

On the calendar (ET)

  • Wednesday, Oct. 21, after the close: Tesla third-quarter results
  • Wednesday, Oct. 21, after the close: Meta results, and its spending plans for artificial intelligence
