Daily Brief · October 16
SPY adds 0.28% overnight as VIX eases to 16.10; Friday brings Import Prices and Industrial Production before the close.
Overnight Tone
Futures carried a constructive tone into Friday's open following Thursday's dense data slate. VIX settled at 16.10, down from 16.46 at the prior close, suggesting modest compression in near-term hedging demand. Fed Chairman Warsh spoke late Thursday evening, and markets appear to have absorbed that commentary without notable disruption to overnight index positioning.
Pre-Market Levels
SPY last printed 771.79 against a prior close of 769.60, a gain of approximately 0.28%. VIX at 16.10 remains in a range consistent with orderly, low-fear tape conditions. A sub-17 VIX environment historically compresses options premium, which has direct implications for premium sellers and buyers alike heading into the weekend.
Calendar Watch
Import Prices m/m (8:30 ET, forecast 0.9%, prior 0.7%), Industrial Production m/m (9:15 ET, forecast 0.4%, prior 0.0%), Capacity Utilization Rate (9:15 ET, forecast 76.5%, prior 76.3%), Federal Budget Balance (2:00 PM ET, forecast -34.7B, prior -166.8B), TIC Long-Term Purchases (4:00 PM ET, forecast 75.2B, prior -27.9B).
Read for the Open
The 8:30 ET Import Prices print arrives first and could set early tone given the week's elevated CPI and PPI readings. Industrial Production and Capacity Utilization at 9:15 ET land inside the first 30 minutes of regular trading; a meaningful deviation from the 0.4% and 76.5% forecasts respectively warrants attention. Watch how SPY 771 holds as an intraday reference given Friday's tendency toward position squaring.
