Nasdaq futures fell more than 2% before the bell on Friday, October 30, 2026, after Amazon and Intel reported. Amazon was down about 7% and Intel about 25% in early trading, while Dow futures were close to flat.

Where the market closed on Thursday, October 29, 2026

  • S&P 500: 7,720.39, down 0.30%
  • Dow: 52,342.56, down 0.25%
  • Nasdaq: 26,184.72, down 1.38%

The big tech names dragged the Nasdaq lower on Thursday, while smaller companies quietly had a good day.

Amazon and Intel drag tech lower

On Thursday I said the big tech names would feel it first. They did, and this morning the pressure comes from their own reports.

Amazon’s sales and profit both came in just short of forecasts. It still plans to spend about $220 billion this year, and over the past twelve months it spent more cash than it brought in.

Intel’s drop is about demand. It pointed to slow sales of its chips for PCs and supply problems with its data-center chips.

Moves this large show up long before the 9:30 open, which is why we wrote a plain guide to premarket trading and what those early prices can and can’t tell you.

My view: the question has moved from how much these companies spend to what that spending earns. I wouldn’t call one bad morning a turn, but Thursday’s small-company gain says money is moving around inside the market, not just leaving it.

What it means for you

A handful of giant companies now drive most of the daily moves in an S&P 500 or Nasdaq fund. Mornings like this show how much of your account rides on them.

When big names slide before the bell, the first stretch after 9:30 tells you a lot about the rest of the day.
