Overnight Tone

Wednesday's FOMC held the Federal Funds Rate at 3.75% as expected, but the accompanying Economic Projections and Powell press conference appear to have weighed on sentiment, with SPY gapping lower into Thursday's session. VIX has pulled back to 17.18 from 18.44, a decline of 1.26 points, suggesting some fear premium was released post-decision rather than amplified. European and Asian sessions are digesting the BOJ's rate move to sub-1.00% and the BOE's hold at 3.75%.

Pre-Market Levels

SPY is indicated at 740.96 versus a prior close of 750.33, a decline of approximately 1.25%. That magnitude of overnight move places the index in a range where short-dated options gamma can amplify intraday swings. VIX at 17.18 reflects a moderate implied volatility environment, neither complacent nor elevated, which keeps near-term options pricing in a measured but watchable zone.

Calendar Watch

Unemployment Claims (forecast 225K, previous 229K) at 8:30 AM ET; Philly Fed Manufacturing Index (forecast 9.8, previous -0.4) at 8:30 AM ET.

Read for the Open

With SPY down 1.25% overnight following the FOMC decision, the first 30 minutes will reveal whether institutional participants treat the gap as a fade or a continuation. The 8:30 AM claims and Philly Fed prints land simultaneously and could reset intraday direction before the open stabilizes. Watch bid-ask spreads on SPY options in the first 15 minutes, as post-FOMC sessions historically carry elevated realized volatility relative to implied.
