Overnight Tone

Equity futures entered Thursday on a slightly defensive footing following Wednesday's FOMC Minutes release, which kept rate-path uncertainty in focus. SPY closed the prior session at 747.71 and is indicated lower at 745.40 heading into the open. VIX is essentially unchanged at 16.94 versus a prior close of 16.90, signaling that implied volatility has not meaningfully repriced overnight despite the modest index softness.

Pre-Market Levels

SPY is indicated at 745.40, a decline of 2.31 points or approximately 0.31% from the prior close of 747.71. VIX at 16.94 remains in a contained range, consistent with a market that is not pricing acute near-term stress. A sub-0.5% overnight drift at this VIX level suggests participants are in a wait-and-see posture ahead of this morning's scheduled data.

Calendar Watch

Unemployment Claims (8:30 AM ET, forecast 218K, prior 215K); FOMC Member Williams Speaks (9:00 AM ET); 30-Year Bond Auction (1:01 PM ET, prior 5.02% / bid-to-cover 2.3).

Read for the Open

The 8:30 AM Unemployment Claims print is the first meaningful data point of the session, with consensus at 218K against a prior 215K. Any notable deviation from that range could shift rate-expectations positioning quickly. Williams speaking at 9:00 AM ET, just as the cash session opens, adds a second variable; monitor how the front end of the rates market responds before drawing conclusions about index direction.
