Daily Brief · July 23
ECB holds at 2.40% as expected; SPY slips 0.12% overnight while VIX climbs to 17.58 ahead of Lagarde's press conference.
Overnight Tone
Futures entered Thursday on a slightly defensive footing, with SPY pulling back from Wednesday's close of 748.28 to 747.41, a decline of 0.12%. The ECB held its Main Refinancing Rate at 2.40% as forecast, removing a binary rate-decision risk, but Lagarde's press conference beginning at 8:45 AM ET keeps EUR-sensitive cross-asset flows active into the U.S. open. VIX lifted from 16.64 to 17.58, signaling a modest uptick in near-term hedging demand.
Pre-Market Levels
SPY is quoted at 747.41, down 0.87 points or approximately -0.12% from the prior close of 748.28. VIX at 17.58 represents a 0.94-point rise from yesterday's 16.64, a roughly 5.6% single-session increase in the fear gauge. That VIX move, while not extreme, suggests option premiums are modestly elevated relative to Wednesday's close and warrants attention to spread pricing before the open.
Calendar Watch
Unemployment Claims (USD, Medium, 8:30 AM ET, forecast 211K, previous 208K); ECB Press Conference (EUR, High, 8:45 AM ET) — the latter carries indirect U.S. index futures relevance given its potential to move EUR/USD and global risk sentiment.
Read for the Open
The 8:30 AM Unemployment Claims print lands first; a material deviation from the 211K consensus could reprice rate-path expectations and move index futures before the cash open. Lagarde's press conference overlaps closely, creating a dual-catalyst window between 8:30 and 9:30 AM ET. Watch bid-ask spreads on SPY options in the first 15 minutes, as simultaneous macro catalysts can temporarily widen them beyond modeled levels.
