Overnight Tone

Equity futures opened the Thursday session on a modestly softer footing following Wednesday's close at 771.33 on SPY. VIX ticked up from 15.81 to 15.95, a contained move that does not signal acute stress but does reflect measured caution ahead of tomorrow's payroll print. European markets absorbed the ECB Economic Bulletin release at 4:00 AM ET without notable disruption to U.S. index futures.

Pre-Market Levels

SPY is indicated at 769.79, a decline of 1.54 points or approximately -0.20% from the prior close of 771.33. That magnitude of drift is well within normal pre-market noise and does not, by itself, alter a neutral near-term posture. VIX at 15.95 remains in a range consistent with orderly, low-fear conditions; no structural shift in volatility regime is evident from these readings alone.

Calendar Watch

Today (Aug 6): Unemployment Claims (8:30 AM ET, forecast 203K, prior 197K) — Medium impact. Tomorrow (Aug 7): Non-Farm Employment Change (8:30 AM ET, forecast 85K, prior 57K) — High impact; Average Hourly Earnings m/m (8:30 AM ET, forecast 0.3%, prior 0.3%) — High impact; Unemployment Rate (8:30 AM ET, forecast 4.2%, prior 4.2%) — High impact.

Read for the Open

The 8:30 AM claims print lands before the bell; the forecast of 203K versus a prior 197K represents a modest expected deterioration, and a meaningful miss in either direction could reprice rate-cut timing expectations into Friday's NFP. Watch how SPY 769 holds in the first fifteen minutes as a near-term reference. FOMC Member Musalem speaks at 5:30 PM ET after the close, which is unlikely to move the session but may set tone for Friday morning positioning.
