Overnight Tone

Futures enter Friday's session carrying a modest overnight bid following a week that included ISM Manufacturing at 54.0 and ISM Services at 54.5, both printing in expansion territory. VIX edged up to 15.25 from 15.15, signaling a slight uptick in hedging demand ahead of the payroll number. Asia and Europe offered no major dislocations, leaving the tape squarely event-driven into the 8:30 AM print.

Pre-Market Levels

SPY last traded at 768.56 against a prior close of 769.79, a decline of approximately 0.16%, reflecting a muted but slightly negative overnight posture. VIX at 15.25 remains well within a low-volatility regime historically, though any meaningful payroll surprise could shift that reading quickly. Options traders should note that a 0.16% drift alone does not establish directional conviction ahead of a high-impact release.

Calendar Watch

08:30 ET: Non-Farm Employment Change (forecast 85K, prior 57K), Average Hourly Earnings m/m (forecast 0.3%, prior 0.3%), Unemployment Rate (forecast 4.2%, prior 4.2%). Also at 10:00 ET: FOMC Member Barkin speaks.

Read for the Open

The first 30 minutes will be dominated by the market's reaction to the NFP headline relative to the 85K consensus and the prior 57K read. Average Hourly Earnings at 0.3% forecast carries equal weight for rate-path interpretation. Watch SPY's initial range expansion and VIX's directional response before drawing any conclusions about intraday structure.
