Daily Brief · November 5
SPY gaps higher by +1.65% overnight as BOE raises rates to 4.00%; claims and productivity data hit at 8:30 ET.
Overnight Tone
Futures carried a constructive bid into Thursday's open, with SPY printing 766.81 against a prior close of 754.35. The Bank of England delivered its rate decision at 7:00 ET, lifting its Official Bank Rate to 4.00% from 3.75%, with the MPC vote forecast at 7-0-2 — a notably hawkish split relative to the prior 3-0-6 reading. European session tone was firm heading into the U.S. handoff.
Pre-Market Levels
SPY is indicated at 766.81, a gain of approximately +1.65% from the prior close of 754.35. VIX edged marginally higher to 16.79 from 16.61, a modest uptick that does not yet signal elevated hedging demand. A sub-17 VIX alongside a gap of this magnitude warrants attention to whether premium expands or compresses through the first hour.
Calendar Watch
Unemployment Claims (8:30 ET, forecast 197K, prior 194K); Prelim Nonfarm Productivity Q/Q (8:30 ET, forecast 2.8%, prior 1.4%); FOMC Member Hammack Speaks (8:50 ET); FOMC Member Barkin Speaks (9:10 ET); BOC Gov Macklem Speaks (10:30 ET); ECB President Lagarde Speaks (1:00 PM ET).
Read for the Open
The 8:30 ET claims print arrives into a gap-up open; a reading meaningfully above the 197K forecast could test the durability of overnight gains. FOMC speakers Hammack and Barkin follow within the first 40 minutes, adding a second potential volatility catalyst. Watch whether the SPY gap holds or fills in the first 30 minutes before establishing any view on intraday structure.
