Daily Brief · September 29
SPY opens softer at 765.61 as JOLTS and CB Consumer Confidence hit at 10 AM; VIX holds near 16.
Overnight Tone
Equity futures enter Tuesday's session on the back foot following Monday's close at 771.35. The RBA delivered a widely anticipated rate hike to 4.60% from 4.35% overnight, with the accompanying press conference adding no material dovish offset. European trade opened without a significant catalyst, leaving U.S. index futures to consolidate near session lows ahead of domestic data.
Pre-Market Levels
SPY is indicated at 765.61, a decline of 5.74 points or approximately 0.74% from the prior close of 771.35. VIX sits at 16.04, essentially unchanged from Monday's 16.07, suggesting options markets are not pricing an outsized move on today's data. A sub-16 VIX in the context of a sub-1% equity pullback reflects a contained, orderly repricing rather than a stress event.
Calendar Watch
CB Consumer Confidence (forecast 89.2, previous 89.4) at 10:00 AM ET; JOLTS Job Openings (forecast 7.23M, previous 7.27M) at 10:00 AM ET; FOMC Member Bowman speaks at 11:00 AM ET.
Read for the Open
The first 30 minutes will likely be shaped by positioning ahead of the 10 AM double-print: Consumer Confidence and JOLTS arrive simultaneously, creating a binary read on demand and labor conditions. Any meaningful miss on JOLTS relative to the 7.23M consensus could interact with the existing softness in SPY. Monitor bid-ask spreads in short-dated SPY options around 9:45–10:05 AM for signs of gamma hedging activity.
